Skagit sells finished annuals and perennials and flats of liners, and is
known for its broad line and differentiated products. The two product
lines are quite distinct. They use separate catalogs, are sold at
different times of the year, are shipped by different methods, and
for the most part, are sold to different customers.
The
finished material is in the form of paks, 2.5", 4" and gallon pots
in flats; and cedar hanging baskets, combination planters, and some
larger (2 and 3 gallon) pots. Flats are created from transplanting
seedling plugs and rooted cuttings, 90% of which comes from their
own propagation. Skagit’s customers are located throughout the Northwest,
east to Minnesota and south to Arizona, and in Alaska, British Columbia
and Alberta.
The
liner flats are seedling plugs or rooted cuttings produced and sold
in a range of plug sizes and configurations. Skagit propagates its
own liners from either seed or cuttings taken from its own stock
plants or unrooted cuttings brought in from nationally known growers.
The customers for these liners are other growers or grower retailers
that will then transplant them for finishing. This program has grown
to include customers in all 50 states, eight provinces of Canada,
and several foreign countries. For the most part, the same varieties
are available as liners that are offered in finished form.
Skagit
maintains formal relationships with breeders, propagators, and other
growers, as sources for new varieties, so they can bring the best
plants to their customers. In addition, Skagit is able to introduce
new varieties and exclusive varieties from her sister company, Thompson
& Morgan, a premier seed hybridizer and world-renowned source of
differentiated seeds and plants.
