Skagit Gardens was started by Jim & Ruth Youngsman in 1967 in Mount Vernon, Washington, from a single greenhouse, supplying annuals and assorted floral plants to garden centers in the greater Seattle area.

The company began producing perennials in 1972. The quality and breadth of its product line enabled Skagit to extend its sales territory into areas beyond Seattle. Skagit Gardens has evolved to become a major suppliers of bedding plants and perennials to garden centers up to 2000 miles away.

In 1984, Skagit also began to supply propagated annual and perennial plants to other growers and garden centers in areas beyond this core service area. Skagit became a member of the International Garden Products family in early 1998.
